Teori Belajar Kognitif
Teori belajar kognitif menjelaskan belajar berfokus pada perubahan-perubahan proses mental internalyang digunakan dalam upaya memahami dunia eksternal. Proses tersebut digunakan mulai dari mempelajari tugas-tugas sederhana seperti memecahkan masalah matematika, atau tugas-tugas sederhana lainnya. Dengan demikian teori kognitip menekankan bahwa dalam proses belajar siswa aktif dalam mengembangkan pemahaman mereka sendiri tentang topic yang mereka pelajari.
Dari perspektif kognitif, belajar adalah perubahan dalam struktur mental seseorang yang memberikan kapasitas untuk menunjukkan perubahan perilaku. Struktur mental ini meliputi : pengetahuan, pengetahuan, keyakinan, keterampilan dan harapan. Teori belajar kognitif menekankan pentingnya proses mental seperti berfikir dan memfokuskan pada apa yang terjadi pada siswa. Proses ini memungkinkan siswa untuk menginterprestasi dan mengorganisir informasi secara aktif , inilah prinsif dasar teori kognitif.
Menurut psikologi kognitif belajar dipandang sebagai usaha untuk mengerti sesuatu. Usaha itu dilakukan secara aktif oleh siswa. Keaktifan itu dapat berupa mencari pengalaman, mencari informasi, mencermati lingkungan, mempraktekkan sesuatu untuk mencapai suatu tujuan tertentu. Para psikolog pendidikan kognitif berkeyakinan bahwa pengetahuan yang dimiliki sebelumnya sangat menentukan keberhasilan mempelajari informasi atau pengetahuan yang baru.
a. Robert M. Gagne
Salah satu teori yang berasal dari psikolog kognitif adalah teori pemrosesan informasi yang dikemukakan oleh Robert M. Gagne. Menurut teori ini belajar dipandang sebagai proses pengolahan informasi dalam otak manusia. Sedangkan pengolahan otak manusia sendiri dapat dijelaskan sebagai berikut: a) Reseptor (alat indera) : menerima rangsangan dari lingkungan dan mengubahnya menjadi rangsaangan neural, memberikan symbol informasi yang diterimanya dan kemudian di teruskan. b) Sensory register (penempungan kesan-kesan sensoris) : yang terdapat pada syaraf pusat, fungsinya menampung kesan-kesan sensoris dan mengadakan seleksi sehingga terbentuk suatu kebulatan perceptual. Informasi yang masuk sebagian masuk ke dalam memori jangka pendek dan sebagian hilang dalam system. c) Short term memory ( memory jangka pendek ) : menampung hasil pengolahan perceptual dan menyimpannya. Informasi tertentu disimpan untuk menentukan maknanya. Memori jangka pendek dikenal juga dengan informasi memori kerja, kapasitasnya sangat terbatas, waktu penyimpananya juga pendek. Informasi dalam memori ini dapat di transformasi dalam bentuk kode-kode dan selanjutnya diteruskan ke memori jangka panjang. d) Long Term memory (memori jangka panjang) : menampung hasil pengolahan yang ada di memori jangka pendek. Informasi yang disimpan dalam jangka panjang, bertahan lama, dan siap untuk dipakai kapan saja. e) Response generator (pencipta respon) : menampung informasi yang tersimpan dalam memori jangka panjang dan mengubahnya menjadi reaksi jawaban.
b. Jean Piaget
Menurut Piaget proses belajar sebenarnya terdiri atas tiga tahapan yaitu :
a) Asimilasi : proses pengintegrasian informasi baru ke struktur kognitif yang sudah ada. b) Akomodasi : proses penyesuaian struktur kognitif ke dalam situasi baru.
c) Equilibrasi : penyesuaian yang berkesinambungan antara asimilasi dan akomodasi. Piaget juga mengemukakan bahwa proses belajar harus disesuaikan dengan tahap perkembangan kognitif yang dilalui siswa. Proses belajar yang dialami seorang anak berbeda pada tahap satu debfab tahap lainnya yang secara umum semakin tinggi tingkat kognitif seseorang maka semakin teratur dan juga semakin abstrak cara berpikirnya. Oleh karena itu guru seharusnya memahami tahap-tahap perkembangan kognitif anak didiknya serta memberikan isi, metode, media pembelajaran yang sesuai dengan tahapannya.
c. Ausubel
Menurut Ausubel siswa akan belajar dengan baik jika isi pelajarannya didefinisikan dan kemudian dipresentasikan dengan baik dan tepat kepada siswa (advanced organizer), dengan demikian akan mempengaruhi pengaturan kemampuan belajar siswa. Advanced organizer adalah konsep atau informasi umum yang mewadahi seluruh isi pelajaran yang akan dipelajari oleh siswa. Advanced organizer memberikan tiga manfaat yaitu : Menyediakan suatu kerangka konseptual untuk materi yang akan dipelajari. Berfungsi sebagai jembatan yang menghubungkan antara yang sedang dipelajari dan yang akan dipelajari. Dapat membantu siswa untuk memahami bahan belajar secara lebih mudah.
d. Bruner
Sementara Bruner mengusulkan teori yang disebutnya free discovery learning. Teori ini menjelaskan bahwa proses belajar akan berjalan dengan baik dan kreatif jika guru memberikan kesempatan kepada siswa untuk menemukan suatu aturan termasuk konsep, teori, ide, definisi dan sebagainya melalui contoh-contoh yang menggambarkan atau mewakili aturan yang menjadi sumbernya.
Keuntungan belajar menemukan : Menimbulkan rasa ingin tahu siswa sehingga dapat memotivasi siswa sehingga dapat menemukan jawabannya. Menimbulkan keterampilan memecahkan masalahnya secara mandiri dan mengharuskan siswa untuk menganalisis dan memanipulasi informasi.
Teori-teori kognitif ini juga sarat akan kritik terutama konsep Piaget karena sulit di terapkan ditingkat lanjut. Selain itu beberapa konsep tertentu, seperti intelegensi, belajar dan pengetahuan yang mendasari teori ini sukar dipahami dan pemahaman itu sendiripun belum tuntas.
Tiga teori kognitif tentang belajar yang terkenal adalah :
a. Teori cognitive field
Teori ini dikemukakan oleh Kurt Lewin ( 1892-1947 ), menurutnya masing-masing individu berada dalam medan kekuatan yang bersifat psikologis, dimana ia bereaksi terhadap “ life space “ yang mencakup perwujudan lingkungan individu bereaksi. Teori ini berpandangan bahwa apabila seseorang belajar maka akan bertambah pengetahuannya. Yang lebih berperan penting dalam belajar adalah motivasi bukan reward. Lewin juga lebih sepakat dengan penggunaan istilah sukses dan gagal dari pada reward dan punishment.
b. Teori Schema
Teori schema mengemukakan keberadaan struktur pengetahuan memiliki dua bentuk yaitu : berbentuk objek dan berbentuk kejadian. Schema dibentuk melalui sebuah abstraksi, schema yang sudah terbentuk akan akan mempengaruhi tentang apa yang telah diingat sebuah pengalaman melalui proses, yaitu : seleksi, pengambilan intisari, dan interprestasi. Schema juga dapat diubah atau dimodifikasi dengan tiga proses yaitu : penambahan, penyesuaian, dan rekstrukturisasi. Siswa yang adaptif memperoleh schemata dan memodifikasinya berdasarkan pengalaman.
c. Teori Pemrosesan Informasi ( information procecing theory )
Merupakan salah satu teori yang pertama dan paling berpengaruh ( Eggen dan Kauchak, 1997 ). Teori pemrosesan informasi adalah teori kognotif tentang belajar yang menggambarkan pemrosesan, penyimpanan, dan perolehan pengetahuan oleh pikiran ( Byrnes, 1996 ).
Menurut teori ini belajar adalah menyangkut tentang bagaimana informasi dari lingkungan dapat disimpan dalam memori, untuk menggambarkan proses tersebut digunakan pemodelan, adapun model penyimpanan informasi yang paling berpengaruh dalam hal ini adalah model yang dikemukakan oleh Atkinson dan Shiffrin pada tahun 1968, model tersebut memiliki tiga komponen mayor yaitu :
1. Information store ( Penyimpanan informasi )
Yaitu tempat penyimpanan data digunakan untuk menyinpan informasi seringkali dianalogikan dengan filing cabinet. Tempat penyimpanan informasi pada manusia tersusun dari tiga storage ( penyimpanan ) yaitu : a) sessory storage, b) short-term memory ( STm ), c) long term memory ( LTM ). Ketiga penyimpamam memori tersebut ditandai oleh cirri-ciri structural seperti seberapa banyak informasi yang disimpan ( kapasitas ) dan berapa lama informasi tersebut disimpan ( Siegler dalam Byrnes, 1996 ).
2. Proses kognitif
Yaitu tindakan internal, intelektual yang mentranfer informasi dari satu tempat penyimpanan ketempat penyimpanan yang lain. Proses kognitif yang terlibat dalam pemrosesan informasi tersebut adalah : perhatian, persepsi, pengulangan / latihan / rehearsal, penyandian / econding, pengungkapan kembali / retrival.
3. Metakognisi
Yaitu pengetahuan dan control terhadap proses-prose kognitif. Metakognisi mengontrol dan mengkoordinasikan proses yang mentransfer informasi dari satu tempat penyimpanan ketempat penyimpanan lainya.
Implikasi teori perkembangan kognitif piaget dalam pembelajaran adalah :
a. Bahasa dan cara berfikir anak berbeda dengan orang dewasa , oleh karena itu guru mengajar dengan menggunakan bahasa yang sesuai dengan menggunakan bahasa yang sesuai dengan cara berfikir anak.
b. Anak-anak akan belajar lebih baik apabila dapat menghadapi lingkungan dengan baik. Guru harus membantu anak agar dapat berinteraksi dengan lingkungan dengan sebaik-baiknya.
c. bahan yang dipelajari anak hendaknya dirasakan baru, tetapi tidak asing
d. Berikan peluang agar anak belajar sesuai tahap perkembangannya
e. Didalam kelas, anak-anak hendaknya diberi peluang untuk saling berbicara dan diskusi dengan teman-temanya.
Kelebihan dan kekurangan teori belajar kognitif
